Law enforcement agencies across the country need your help. The 2017 Aftermath K9 Grant competition is underway.
The Nebraska State Patrol said if they win, they hope to purchase a new dog. Lieutenant Gordon Downing has had his dog Zink on patrol with him for the past five years.
Zink is just one of 11 of NSP's canines.
"We do currently have a vacancy, so at full strength we're at 12," said Downing.
Downing is head of the canine unit and said a $5,000 grant from the company Aftermath could mean a lot for their department.
"Dogs are expensive and we have to replace them from time to time. So, I saw this as an opportunity maybe to help supplement the purchase of a dog in the future," said Downing.
NSP said a canine normally though costs $10,000. Their current budget doesn't have extra money for canine upkeep and care, so another possibility is saving the money for their current dogs.
"We'll work them as long as they're able to work at the same time we don't work them into a point to where we're medicating them to work everyday," said Downing.
Downing said these dogs play a big role in assisting NSP and they depend on them daily.
"Whether it's a drug seizure off the interstate that maybe you see in the news. Or it's a manhunt somewhere, my guys are involved in that as well as instructing a number of things. They stay pretty busy," said Downing.
Nebraska State Patrol, Grand Island Police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are the three agencies in Nebraska competing in this nationwide event. They need your votes to win.
