LCSO opens internships to high school students

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is opening their internship program to high school students.

North Platte High School junior Marissa Garcia is the first student to do an internship at the sheriff's office.

She's there five days a week, job shadowing staff in the office, investigations department, booking area, or out on patrol with deputies.

College internships are not new for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, but Lieutenant Jeff Hedgecock says it's important to support students who have an interest in the field.

"We need to get the young kids to see what they want to do in the future and to better themselves," Lt. Hedgecock said. "Right now is a tough time for kids, but I do hope she passes it on to other kids in the high school."

The high school internship program was launched by the district's superintendent last year as a pilot program with only three students participating.
