SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) - A new Subway restaurant will open later this year inside the Scottsbluff Walmart on Avenue I, filling the space formerly occupied by a fast-food competitor.
Officials with GJN Development of Fort Collins have confirmed with NBC Nebraska that remodeling on the space inside the store is underway, with the new Subway slated to open somewhere in mid-March to early April. The space was formerly occupied by a McDonald’s, which abruptly closed its doors one year ago.
Pete Sorenson with GJN says the new store will have Subway’s new, distinctive “Fresh Forward” design, compared to the “Tuscany” style used in the company’s existing stores in the Panhandle. According to documents on file with the city of Scottsbluff, the estimated cost of the remodel is $50,000.
GJN also operates Subway restaurants in Morrill, Mitchell, Gering and two already in Scottsbluff on W. 27th Street and inside the Monument Mall. Sorenson says he doesn’t expect the new store to have a negative impact on the other locations, and some of the more-veteran employees at the existing stores may be asked to help new staff get up to speed once the Walmart location opens. Sorenson says he would anticipate hiring of new staff to take place two to three weeks before the new store opens.
