The National Weather Service monitors Red Flag conditions

NORTH PLATTE. Neb -- The National Weather Service in North Platte issued a red flag warning for Interstate 80 in Nebraska on Sunday due to ripe conditions for grass fires.

Red Flag warnings are meant to inform federal and state partners about the potential for large fires.

The agency said this time of year is considered fire season for our area. The smoke from Sunday's fire near Lake McConaughy could be seen on their radar.

They said there are several factors during this time that make the risk for grass fires much greater.

"At this time of year, we are really concerned about the winds. The winds and the one hour fuels, fuels like the grasses, is what's going to push and fuel the fire so that's what we are really concerned about today," said Shawn Jacobs, a meteorologist for The National Weather Service in North Platte.

The agency said they expect to see some relief in conditions by the middle of this week.
