DARE keeps it REAL.

The elementary school program dedicated to keeping kids away from drugs is making a few changes.

DARE is now called Keepin' it Real.

REAL is an acronym for Refuse, Explain, Avoid and Leave.

The new curriculum is still given by DARE America.

The North Platte Police Department says it focuses on decision- making skills in young people and includes a variety of topics.

“It's more student involved. The topics will continue to still be over substance abuse. But they've reduced the coverage of alcohol and tobacco. There is still a chapter on that, but they've included topics like bullying, stress. Some things DARE felt it was important to get into the classroom to kids this age,” sasy Rodney Brown, Public Information Officer, NPPD.

The program for elementary schools will now also be more multimedia to adapt to the more tech-savvy students.

The police department will begin implementing the program in September.
