Lexington Public Schools is ahead of the game when it comes to healthy food options.
“We're trying to get the kids to eat healthy and help with the obesity problem that we have,” says Mary Stauffer, LPS Food Service Dir.
So four years ago, the school district implemented the healthy snack program thanks to a grant that provides students with a healthy snack throughout the day.
“Our motto is "Eating our way through the colors of the rainbow" I like to make things colorful,” says Stauffer.
The program not only instills healthy eating habits, but it exposes students to different fruits and veggies who may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so.
“And so when they go out to the grocery store and ask their mother if they can have that,” says Stauffer.
That is why Stauffer is also considering adding more exotic fruits and vegetables to the menu.
“Some of the ones that we are not used to seeing the grocery store in this area maybe in other areas there is but this gives them a chance to taste those,” says Stauffer.
