It's cold outside.
But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the wonderful outdoors of Nebraska.
So grab your fishing pool and bait.
Before you start frying your fish you need to take the proper steps in order to be safe when you're out on the ice.
“The Ice Out here at Birdwood right now is 7 inches which is pretty good ice there doing good on it right now. There catching a lot of trout on some different types of bait and give you a chance to give it a try it's a good time to be out here the weathers nice and there doing pretty good on the trout,” says Dudley Sorensen, Game & Parks Conservation Officer.
“We'll drill a few holes test holes check the ice before we walk out on it to make sure it that we have good ice out there before we venture out on the ice,” adds Patrick, an avid fisherman.
After checking the thickness of your ice it doesn't just stop. There are some extra precautions that you can do to be safe.
“We always make sure we have a long length of rope we do where ice cleats we fish together there's always two of us we never go on it by ourselves,” says Patrick.
“If you have float coats where them when you're out here one of the things people will do tie a nail of some kind around their wrist so if they do fall thru screw drivers and anything sharp if they do fall thru they can jam them into the ice pull themselves out,” says Dudley.
Grab Grandpa and Uncle Bill it's a fun activity for the whole family. just grab your pole and head on the lake.
“I have two daughters and they came out here they learned how to fish on the ice and a matter a fact there would be days they would be days they would be off from school and the weather wouldn't be to great,” says Patrick. “And they would be like lets go dad and I would be oh no not really but there both good fisher man and they love to fish and we really do. When they come home they both live out of state and when they come home they always try getting out and spending one day hunting or fishing.”
