Kid Klub Treated to Science Show

By Luke Simmons.

It was graduation day for the Kids Club summer program at Lincoln Elementary.

The kids were treated with a very special guest as a reward for all their hard work over the summer.

Dan Sullivan is a retired professor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, with a PhD in Chemistry. Now, he's teaching a slightly different age group than before, with a fun and entertaining traveling science show.

“We see about 30,000 kids a year all over the country, up in Canada and all over the United States,” says Sullivan.

The CAPOW program, short for Chemistry and Physics on Wheels, was on full display at Lincoln Elementary today. About 120 kids enrolled in the eight-week summer program were treated to Dr. Sullivan's show before their graduation ceremony.

The Director of Kids Klub, Eric Thomas always wants to bring the CAPOW show back, “We've had Dr. Sullivan come out probably about five times before this. It's an activity that the kids love to watch, but it's also reinforcing some of the things that they've learned, we have a great science program in the summer, so this is a fun way to reward them while still keeping in the academic spirit of things.”

Sullivan weaves important scientific principles into his hour long show, that's filled with many surprises along the way.

“Just watching the understanding dawn on the child's face, particularly you can see children who often aren't the class star, and see that they're beginning to figure out what's going on and they realize that they know what's happening, and that's a lot of fun,” said Sullivan.
