Fast start not enough for Husker women against Purdue

The Nebraska women's basketball team fell to Rutgers Saturday afternoon in Piscataway, New Jersey, snapping its six-game winning streak.

Despite jumping out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter, the Huskers stalled, letting the Boilermakers tie things up after three.

Purdue piled on in the fourth, outscoring Nebraska 26-16 to win 66-56.

The lack of depth for Nebraska was evident, as the team scored zero bench points, and all starters played at least 36 minutes.

Freshman forward Jessica Shepard led Big Red with 23 points and added four rebounds.

Natalie Romeo remained hot from 3-pt range, making 4-of-8 shots from beyond the perimeter. Romeo finished with 18 points and now leads the NCAA Division I in total 3-pointers made.

The next women's game is on Tuesday, February 2, when they take on Penn State at home. Tip off is at 7:00
