Lincoln, Logan & McPherson Counties
Youth between the ages of 15 to 19 from Lincoln, Logan and McPherson Counties have the opportunity to learn about government processes in the vibrant, living classroom of the nation’s capital as part of Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), an intensive 4-H civic engagement program for high-school youth held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD. Area 4-H members participate in this program every three years. Plans are being made for the next program in June 2018. To learn more about this program contact Nebraska Extension in North Platte at baufdenkamp1@unl.edu or by calling 308-532-2683.

Youth who are not actively enrolled in 4-H are being sought to fill open participant spots. This program will depart early June 2018 for a 15 day chartered motor coach trip visiting St Louis, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Niagara Falls, Gettysburg, Canada and Washington D.C.

While in Washington D.C. the group will stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. Youth interact with youth form across the country while participating in civic workshops, committees, and field trips before returning home to make positive changes in their own communities. CWF not only strengthens young people’s understanding of the government’s civic process, but it also boosts their leadership skills, communication skills, and overall confidence.
During CWF, youth get a behind-the-scenes look at the nation’s capital while meeting with Members of Congress to learn more about how their government works. At the end of the program, youth draft step-by-step action plans to address important issues in their communities.
For more information contact, Brenda Aufdenkamp, UNL Extension Educator in Lincoln, Logan, McPherson Counties at baufdenkamp1@unl.edu or call 308-532-2683.

The 2017 Tree Care Workshops will be held statewide February 28 to March 22. They focus on the many benefits community trees provide and ways to both care for and use them. A new feature this year will be demonstrations of how wood from dead and dying trees can be utilized instead of hauled away and burned. Recent inventories reveal a decline in community trees statewide. In western Nebraska, ash trees have been rapidly declining from environmental causes. When the emerald ash borer reaches this part of the state many more ash trees will die. Tree selection and care is increasingly important for resilient community landscapes. For towns facing ash tree removal, the workshops will include a sawmill demonstration and sessions on producing biochar and using it and other types of wood waste. Other sessions focus on protecting tree roots during construction, environmental challenges to trees, and selecting trees appropriate for local conditions.

These workshops will be offered Feb. 28 in Alliance, March 1 in North Platte, March 2 in Ord, March 3 in Kearney, March 7 in Ithaca, March 21 in Norfolk and March 22 in Omaha.

The Nebraska Forest Service, in coordination with the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, offers these annual training workshops for public works employees, landscape managers, tree board volunteers, arborists, nursery and green industry professionals and landscape enthusiasts. Cost of the full-day workshops is $45; for descriptions, discounts, locations and registration, go to: http://nfs.unl.edu/tree-care-workshops.
