In partnership with the Dawson County Historical Society Museum, Dawson PPD is currently showcasing its history in the Art Gallery. The exhibit, titled “Yesterday’s Vision, Today’s Power,” highlights the Rural Electrification Act, the formation of Dawson PPD and the evolution of lineworker safety.

“Dawson PPD has a rich history and we’re eager to share it with the public,” said Communications Specialist Chelsea Gengenbach. “Since the District’s founding in 1937, our board members, employees and customers have witnessed several milestones in American history, the power of Mother Nature and numerous technology improvements in overall safety and efficiency.”

The display will be available for public viewing now through March 31. The museum is located at 805 Taft Street, Lexington. Public viewing hours are:

Tuesday – Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

In addition, Dawson PPD will host an open house at its Lexington headquarters on May 4. Plans include facility tours and the burial of the 80th anniversary time capsule. The time capsule will be placed in a junction box, a piece of electrical equipment typically containing electric wires, and will be sealed until the District’s 100th anniversary.

Dawson Public Power District is a Nebraska rural electric utility system that serves south central Nebraska along the Platte River Valley. Organized in 1937, Dawson PPD provides service to more than 23,000 electric meters and maintains over 5,800 miles of power lines. The district’s 5,000 square miles territory includes all of the rural areas in Dawson and Buffalo Counties, approximately two-thirds of Gosper County, a third of Lincoln County and parts of Custer, Sherman and Frontier Counties. Dawson PPD also serves several villages including Hershey, Maxwell, Brady, Farnam, Eustis, Elwood, Eddyville, Smithfield, Overton, Sumner, Miller, Riverdale, Amherst, Odessa and Pleasanton. Agri/Eco Tourism Workshop Scholarship Offered

Event Dates and Times

2/21/2017 - 2/23/2017
One Box Convention Center, Broken Bow
Visitors want to experience what we sometimes take for granted here in Nebraska – our wide open spaces, our beautiful dark skies, our rich farming and ranching heritage, our abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. Agritourism and Ecotourism are two of the fastest growing segments of the tourism industry. Couple those with the emerging trend of “farm to table” culinary tourism and you’ve got a recipe for success for rural Nebraska.
You don’t have to own a working farm or ranch to participate in agritourism, and ecotourism doesn’t only mean a safari to a tropical rainforest. North Platte’s Dusty Trails has been making a living in the agri/ecotourism field for several years partnering with the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Recreation Area offering tanking and tubing on the Platte River as well as horseback rides. Other examples of agri/ecotourism include a winery, brewery, or cheese making operation; opening up land to hiking, birdwatching, photography or stargazing; guiding local birdwatching excursions; Sandhill or canyon tours; rural winery/brewery/distillery tours; A restaurant that incorporates locally sourced produce; hunting; farm stays or tours. The possibilities truly are endless!
Each year the Nebraska Tourism Commission hosts the Nebraska Agri/Eco-Tourism Workshop to help rural entrepreneurs learn how to get the most out of their land, gain the latest industry knowledge, hear fresh marketing ideas, find greater financial opportunities and network with potential partners. The 2017 conference is scheduled for February 21-23, 2017 at the One-Box Convention Center in Broken Bow.
The North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau believes strongly in the opportunities available in the area of agri/ecotourism for Lincoln County. As part of our commitment to continuing to help grow the rural tourism product offered in Lincoln County, we are offering two scholarships in the amount of $300 each to help defray the cost of Lincoln County entrepreneurs attending this workshop.
The scholarships are a stipend and not intended to cover all costs associated with the conference, but are reimbursements to cover the cost of conference registration, lodging, meals and travel.
Applicants must complete an application and include up to three typed pages of information with answers to the following: Statement of financial need; number of years they have attended the Nebraska Agri/Eco Tourism Workshop; statement explaining existing or future tourism organization/business; statement explaining how attending the Nebraska Agri/Eco Tourism Workshop will benefit them and/or their organization/business. In addition, applicants agree to provide a written summary to the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau detailing what they learned at the workshop and how their tourism business/organization will benefit.
Conference information and registration can be found online at http://visitnebraska.com/media/industry/2017-agri-ecotourism-workshop. The scholarship guidelines and application can be downloaded at VisitNorthPlatte.com. Completed applications must be postmarked back to the Visitors Bureau by Monday, February 6. For more information contact 308-532-4729.
