This selection from the permanent collection of the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts features works that demonstrate the significant impact a change of location can have on the artistic process. Artists from across the country and around the world visit the small riverside town in the Great Plains through their artist in residence program. They are inevitably influenced by this new environment. Some artists engage directly with the location, community, and history, while others find that limitations of travel and new facilities create modifications and problem-solving strategies that add to their long-term practice.

These works represent a broad spectrum of the creative process, including works developed prior to the residency, experiments while in residence and projects that are completed much later, but initially instigated at Kimmel’s residency program.

The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is an artists’ residency program in Nebraska City, NE. They offer living and studio accommodations to writers, composers, visual and interdisciplinary artists on a competitive basis. Residency programs are often referred to as “gifts of time and space.” Artists travel to a host location, where they have a concentrated period of time to turn their sole focus to their creative endeavor. While the initial lure of a residency is often uninterrupted time, residencies often do disrupt a creative practice – constructively -- through the influence of place.

Lincoln, Logan & McPherson Counties
Youth between the ages of 15 to 19 from Lincoln, Logan and McPherson Counties have the opportunity to learn about government processes in the vibrant, living classroom of the nation’s capital as part of Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), an intensive 4-H civic engagement program for high-school youth held at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD. Area 4-H members participate in this program every three years. Plans are being made for the next program in June 2018. To learn more about this program contact Nebraska Extension in North Platte at baufdenkamp1@unl.edu or by calling 308-532-2683.

Youth who are not actively enrolled in 4-H are being sought to fill open participant spots. This program will depart early June 2018 for a 15 day chartered motor coach trip visiting St Louis, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, Niagara Falls, Gettysburg, Canada and Washington D.C.

While in Washington D.C. the group will stay at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center. Youth interact with youth form across the country while participating in civic workshops, committees, and field trips before returning home to make positive changes in their own communities. CWF not only strengthens young people’s understanding of the government’s civic process, but it also boosts their leadership skills, communication skills, and overall confidence.
During CWF, youth get a behind-the-scenes look at the nation’s capital while meeting with Members of Congress to learn more about how their government works. At the end of the program, youth draft step-by-step action plans to address important issues in their communities.
