Willow Street Overlay - B Street to Rodeo Rd.
The City of North Platte’s contractor, Barne’s Construction, will begin construction on the Willow Street overlay project from “B” Street to Rodeo Road starting Monday March 13th. The Contractor will be performing concrete repairs and installation of ADA ramps at the intersections which will require the closure of some streets east and west of Willow Street for several days once construction begins on that intersection. Delays and lane closures should be expected on these streets and alternate routes are recommended. Please use caution around the construction area and follow flagger instructions and traffic control signs. Traffic control signs in a work zone are for the safety of the motorist as well as the construction workers so please follow the posted signage. The North Platte Engineering Department would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation in making this a safe and expedient project. If you have any questions, please contact the City of North Platte Engineering Department at 535-6724.

This selection from the permanent collection of the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts features works that demonstrate the significant impact a change of location can have on the artistic process. Artists from across the country and around the world visit the small riverside town in the Great Plains through their artist in residence program. They are inevitably influenced by this new environment. Some artists engage directly with the location, community, and history, while others find that limitations of travel and new facilities create modifications and problem-solving strategies that add to their long-term practice.

These works represent a broad spectrum of the creative process, including works developed prior to the residency, experiments while in residence and projects that are completed much later, but initially instigated at Kimmel’s residency program.

The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts is an artists’ residency program in Nebraska City, NE. They offer living and studio accommodations to writers, composers, visual and interdisciplinary artists on a competitive basis. Residency programs are often referred to as “gifts of time and space.” Artists travel to a host location, where they have a concentrated period of time to turn their sole focus to their creative endeavor. While the initial lure of a residency is often uninterrupted time, residencies often do disrupt a creative practice – constructively -- through the influence of place.

In partnership with the Dawson County Historical Society Museum, Dawson PPD is currently showcasing its history in the Art Gallery. The exhibit, titled “Yesterday’s Vision, Today’s Power,” highlights the Rural Electrification Act, the formation of Dawson PPD and the evolution of lineworker safety.

“Dawson PPD has a rich history and we’re eager to share it with the public,” said Communications Specialist Chelsea Gengenbach. “Since the District’s founding in 1937, our board members, employees and customers have witnessed several milestones in American history, the power of Mother Nature and numerous technology improvements in overall safety and efficiency.”

The display will be available for public viewing now through March 31. The museum is located at 805 Taft Street, Lexington. Public viewing hours are:

Tuesday – Friday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

In addition, Dawson PPD will host an open house at its Lexington headquarters on May 4. Plans include facility tours and the burial of the 80th anniversary time capsule. The time capsule will be placed in a junction box, a piece of electrical equipment typically containing electric wires, and will be sealed until the District’s 100th anniversary.

Dawson Public Power District is a Nebraska rural electric utility system that serves south central Nebraska along the Platte River Valley. Organized in 1937, Dawson PPD provides service to more than 23,000 electric meters and maintains over 5,800 miles of power lines. The district’s 5,000 square miles territory includes all of the rural areas in Dawson and Buffalo Counties, approximately two-thirds of Gosper County, a third of Lincoln County and parts of Custer, Sherman and Frontier Counties. Dawson PPD also serves several villages including Hershey, Maxwell, Brady, Farnam, Eustis, Elwood, Eddyville, Smithfield, Overton, Sumner, Miller, Riverdale, Amherst, Odessa and Pleasanton.
