NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -
North Platte lifter Carson Hoover competed over Zoom on Monday for a spot on the USA Weightlifting Youth World Team. Hoover is one of 20 lifters competing for ten spots on the team.
“I’m nervous because it’s something new,” Hoover said. “It’s not our traditional meet, it’s something different with it being here and not being out on a platform."
Hoover trains at Enzo Athletic Performance, and this is the first time he or anyone else at the gym has competed at this level.
“This is the first time anyone at our gym has gotten a chance to compete internationally, so I’m excited to represent the team,” Hoover said.
Hoover competed in the snatch and the clean and jerk lifts. To qualify, he needs to be in the top two of his weight class, and his qualifying weight was close to the top of his class, he said.
While the situation of competing virtually was unusual, Hoover treated the event like any other competition.
“I’m just going to plan on doing it like I always do, just like we do in practice. This is what we’ve been training for, and this is what I’ve been doing constantly for however long I’ve been lifting,” Hoover said before the competition.
The last group of lifters competing will be July 1, with results expected to be released shortly thereafter.
