NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - U.S. Senator Ben Sasse announced Wednesday a public-private partnership with Nebraska manufacturing plant, Becton, Dickinson, and Company (BD). The medical technology company is partnering with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).This partnership will invest millions of dollars into BD’s manufacturing operations in Nebraska.
BARDA is part of the U.S. Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, to develop new manufacturing lines for injection devices that will provide priority access to the U.S. government for hundreds of millions of syringes and needles to support current and future pandemic vaccination efforts.
”Nebraskans know how to get the job done. This partnership is good news because it will help us beat this nasty virus once we have a vaccine while making a big investment in Nebraska’s workers. This effort will take a heavy lift, and I’m grateful our state is going to play a big role,” said Senator Sasse.
Wednesday, BD announced the formation of a strategic, public-private partnership with BARDA to develop new manufacturing lines for injection devices that will provide priority access to the U.S. government for hundreds of millions of syringes and needles to support current and future pandemic vaccination efforts, and the finalization of an initial pandemic order for 50 million needles and syringes to be delivered by the end of December 2020 to support the U.S. vaccination effort for COVID-19.
In the release, BD announced BARDA will invest an estimated $42 million into a $70 million capital project to further expand BD’s operations and manufacturing capacity in Nebraska, where the company has manufactured medical devices for nearly 70 years. BD officials saying the order will be fulfilled through BD’s current manufacturing capacity, and the company continues to work closely with the U.S. government to finalize additional near-term quantities of injection devices that will be needed to fulfill the promise of the Operation Warp Speed vaccine program.
It was recently reported that the Broken Bow BD furloughed many of its employees over the past couple of months. This is a developing story, and KNOP-TV has reached out to the Broken Bow location to see if this new partnership will have any effect on the employee situation at that Nebraska BD location.
