Friday Night Sports Hero: Clay Brandon
Brandon plays second base and pitches for the Broken Bow Legion baseball seniors
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Clay Brandon started playing baseball at the age of four. His dad pushed him to get started, and his love for the game has kept him playing.
“It’s my favorite sport. I love doing it, I work hard every single day for it, and have a good time doing it,” he said.
Brandon has played for the Broken Bow Legion baseball team for five years. When he first planned to try out for the team, he knew he had to work hard if he wanted to make the team.
“When I was an eighth grade, I was moving up to Legion, and I knew I had to practice to play with these guys. So, every single day I would take grounders, work on drills, taking batting practice with coach, all those things and it’s been history from there,” Brandon said.
However, the hard work did not stop after he made the team, as Brandon continues to work hard every day.
“He’s pretty much the first one at the field every day,” said his head coach, Dallas Amond, “even for our juniors games, which we play first, he’s in the cages before we even show up. I know that I can always count on him to put in whatever work that he needs to put in to be ready for game time.”
Brandon bats first for the Indians, and Amond knows he will provide quality at-bats at the top of the lineup.
“He’s one of those that likes to work the count for sure. He knows what the team needs and he knows how to get us started,” Amond said.
Brandon is a leader on the team, and expects the best from himself and his teammates.
“He’s just a great athlete. He’s dedicated, loves to help out the other kids with any techniques and fundamentals,” Amond said. “He doesn’t like when people are lazy or not doing their job, he definitely pushes them to the next level. We can always expect the best.”
