NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - A local non-profit organization is doing their part to help students prepare for school this fall.

The Guardians of the Children and the North Platte Public School District distributed backpacks filled with school supplies to children in grades pre-school to 12th grade Tuesday afternoon.

“We couldn’t have our community appreciation event in April like we wanted to, so this is our way of at least showing the community that we want to give back,” said Nate Yancy, Guardians of the Children Vice-President.

About 650 were given away. The distribution was made possible through community donations and a private donor.

“There is so much unknown nobody really knows what to expect,” said Brandy Buscher, North Platte Public Schools Student Services Director. “I think there is fears, I think people are afraid to go maybe shopping for those supplies. I think maybe financially it is a huge cost to go buy school supplies so anything we can do to alleviate some of the stress during this stressful time really helps families out.”

If you were not able to make it to the backpack distribution, contact Buscher at 308-535-7100. Children must be enrolled in the public school district to receive a backpack.
