NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - With COVID-19 shutting down many places, the river has become one of the main hot-spots for folk in and near North Platte. Staying safe on the water is important.

According to emergency officials, the river is seeing more people than normal for this time of year.

The Director of Emergency Management for Lincoln County Brandon Myers, explains the importance of preparing for a day on the river.

Myers adds that right now the waters are fairly low, but as the water rises, the danger threat also rises. Plus he tells News 2 that with higher waters, the temperature tends to cool, leading to risks of hypothermia.

Myers explains if you do find yourself in the situation where you are unintentionally in the water, then it’s important that you get yourself to safety.

Myers said if you are in an emergency be sure to call 9-1-1. He adds, services from emergency management are readily available.
