NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -If your trash flies away, a ticket may be coming your way.

On the route leading to the Transfer Station, Nebraska State Patrol will be looking out for people littering. They will also have a close eye on cars and trucks with loads that are not properly covered with tarp.

Trash and other discarded items are pilling up on the road ways and organizations, such as Keep North Platte Beautiful, are being stretched thin. Recently, they collected about 700 bags of trash from roadside cleaning efforts.

Mona Anderson, executive director of Keep North Platte Beautiful, urges the community to be more aware of the damage trash and litter can do to our environment.

“Rainwater gets into our ditches with the litter," said Anderson. "That water can get into our water supply and pollute our water.”
