Honor Flight Exhibit shows veteran appreciation
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - The Patriotic Productions Honor Flight Exhibit is now at the Brule Activity Center. It is set up for the weekend. Organizer BJ Van Velson says this is a great way to bring something fun to the community.
“Well myself I’ve been reading a lot, it was kind of slow here for a while and I got to reading more, and I was learning a lot too. And the younger kids came and they enjoyed looking at it. I thought it was something we could do with the space and bring people to town,” said BJ.
This exhibit was created by Patriotic Productions which organized flights to Washington D.C., giving nearly 3,500 veterans from 386 Nebraska communities a wonderful opportunity. They got the chance view the many memorials in D.C.
Veteran John Van Velson reflected on his time in Washington DC
“Typically the return from Vietnam was not a big deal for a lot of people. But it was a big deal for a bunch of us that got back. But, wasn’t necessarily celebrated throughout the United States. Then they put this thing together, made the trip down there, went through all the memorials, came back,” said John. “The reception when we got back in Lincoln was a homecoming like you couldn’t believe. But this showed you how many people were truly behind what was going on and it made a world of a difference. It was a good time coming home.”
This is giving veterans an opportunity to re-live their experiences, and for family members, volunteers and patriots of all ages to reminisce and educate others about the importance of thanking and honoring our veterans.
Saturday the exhibit will be open 10 am to 8 pm. Sunday it will be open 11 am to 3 pm.
