NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -The Quilts of Valor awarded one of the many veterans in the North Platte community for his military service.

Riley Burchell, who served in the air force from 1958 to 1962 as a first class airmen in the supply field and in Saudi Arabia, was awarded a quilt.

“I really don’t think I deserve this but I am highly honored,” said Burchell. “I have a lot friends who have been in the military. I think we don’t give our veterans enough praise.”

Quilt of Valor is a national organization that awards quilts to veterans touched by war.

“I am grateful for the veterans that come before us and the ones that are serving now,” said Burchell.

"The quilts awarded through Quilts of Valor could be recognized as civilian purple hearts,” said Marilyn McGahan, member of Quilts of Valor. “This is way to provide comfort and recognition for our veterans.”

It takes roughly 40 to 80 hours to make each quilt.

Since 2003, 257,000 quilts have been awarded nationwide. In Nebraska, 750 quilts have be awarded to veterans. Twenty-three quilts have been awarded in North Platte.

The organization will be awarding more veterans in North Platte in the upcoming weeks.
