Cottage Law brings second income opportunity
Selling food from home
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Now more than ever people are finding creative ways to make extra money. Thanks to the Cottage Food Producer Law, people can use their own homes to cook and sell baked goods, breads, cookies, candies, and more. People can find those extra funds selling food from home. Katie Alvarado and her at home business Crumb-Diddly-Umptious by Kate have grown since her start back in June.
“With the Cottage Laws and stuff I think it’s very, very helpful for the little person, you know, that might not have the funds initially to go ahead and be something big going into it so they can kind of go at it and kind of test the waters before they jump in in with both feet,” said Alvarado.
She says she enjoys her cookie business and wants to continue to do so even with her busy schedule working, going to school, and raising two kids.
“Knowing that it is something that I produced that someone else is really enjoying just makes me happy makes me want to keep going with it,” said Alvarado.
Brenda Aufdenkamp, the Food, Nutrition and Health Educator at the UNL Extension office, says to sell from home, first go onto Nebraska Department of Agriculture to apply for licensing. Then you’ll take the serve safe food handlers class at the Nebraska Extension.
“We all want to make a second income. If I can go home from my regular job and make a couple batches of candy and sell it and bring in a little bit of money to subsidize my grocery bill every week, power to us. Stay at home moms this might be something, they stay at home cause they have young children or whatever, but to do a second income would be really feasible for them. And that’s why I wanted to offer this class on November 4th. So that if there’s anybody that’s thinking about it just thinking about if there’s a possibility for a second income, come learn,” said Aufdenkamp.
This class will be Nov, 4 at the West Central Research Extension Center from 1 - 3 p.m. There will be a $25 fee. To register go online to go.unl.edu/sellingfoodsafely or call 308-532-2683.
