North Platte Tennis Association hosts tennis tournament
Costumes and wooden racquets made this tournament unique
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -The North Platte Tennis Association put on a tennis tournament at Cody Park today. The event saw competitors dress up in classic tennis attire and play with wooden racquets. A blast from the past, but the players loved it.
“We just love coming out here playing and it just adds an extra element, it’s fun to just dress up... it makes everything a little more light hearted," said Jaydn Orr. She won the award for best costume and received a gift card to a local business. This tournament was created to provide a fun and different environment for tennis, in hopes of attracting more people to the sport.
“The tennis community in North Platte isn’t what it once was, but we’re working hard to garner interest and fix some of the obstacles we face" said one board member of The North Platte Tennis Association. One such obstacle is getting the courts at Cody Park re-surfaced to ensure play is safe for everybody. Still, the Association starts it’s winter league soon and players of all levels are welcome to join.
“You can never go wrong by picking up a racquet and getting out on the court; just go out and play and have fun,” said tournament director Marcelle Styrdom.
