NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Around 4,000 trout from Rock Creek Hatchery have been stocked at the Birdwood Wildlife Management Area locally known as Fire Lake. These trout are a catchable size at 10 inches. Julie with Nebraska Game and Parks says this is a great way to get people outside.

“We stock city lakes and ponds all across the state so there’s a lot of opportunity for people to get outside and fish for these rainbow trout,” said Julie Geiser, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Public Information Officer.

When fishing for rainbow trout there is a limit of five fish per day. Julie said Fire Lake is a popular place to fish.

“It’ll be nice for anglers yet this fall and into this winter when the water freezes over you’ll see a lot of ice anglers out here utilizing these fish as well," said Geiser. "And they’re good eating trout, 10 inch and some larger. So it’ll be a fun time for all ages of anglers that want to come out here and try to catch trout.”

Individuals who are 16 years old and over need to buy a fishing permit. You can get a permit online on the commissions website, Walmart, The Minow Bucket, and Game and Parks.
