Apples for fall fun
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Apples are now in season and can be a fun addition to your fall and Halloween plans. Apples have been freshly picked, are readily available in local grocery stores and are a favorite every fall. Apples are grown in 36 states commercially and are at a good price this time of year.
“This time of the year is the time to talk about apples because this is when the harvest is happening. So at the supermarket we should be seeing, and we have in the last month really, the lowest apples prices by pound that we’re going to see,” said Food Nutrition and Health Extension Educator, Brenda Aufdenkamp.
Aufdenkamp said there are a lot of recipes you can enjoy with different types of apples.
“I’ve been making rather than caramel apples you make apple bites. And you just use your melon baller and you ball up little pieces of whatever variety of apple you want and then you just have them dip it into either make your caramel dip which is wonderful or buy a commercial caramel dip you can dip it into,” said Aufdenkamp.
Brenda says different apples have different amounts of flavors and nutritious value.
“This one is a red delicious. And I will tell you any child, even high school student, anybody under the age of 18. When you say pick an apple they’re gonna go to the red delicious. Because it’s what we customarily think of an apple, it’s all bright red," said Aufdenkamp, “This one is an Apple Crisp. This one isn’t what we would normally think of in our minds as a bright evenly red apple but the flavor on this one as well as the skins are way more palatable and way sweeter.”
You can also make apple nachos and Halloween decorated treats. For a cinnamon apple recipe and more check out llm.unl.edu under the foods link on the top.
