LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Nebraska lost to Northwestern 21-13 on Saturday in Evanston, Illinois. The Huskers were unable to come back in the final minutes, despite a valiant effort from Scott Frost’s team. Luke McCaffrey drove the team 78 yards down the field in the final minute, but McCaffrey’s pass to Wan’Dale Robinson fell incomplete with :01 remaining. The redshirt freshman quarterback entered the game in the second half after starter Adrian Martinez threw a costly interception. McCaffrey also had an interception, which occurred near the goal line in the fourth quarter.

With the loss, Nebraska drops to 0-2 on the season. The Huskers host Penn State at Memorial Stadium next week.

The Huskers were doomed by missed red zone chances and penalties. Nebraska was flagged 9 times for 55 yards.

Dedrick Mills scored the Huskers' lone touchdown, which was a 3-yard run before halftime. Nebraska held a 13-7 lead at the break, but couldn’t hold off a strong third quarter from the Wildcats. After receiving the second half kickoff, Northwestern marched 61 yards, capped by a touchdown pass from Peyton Ramsey to John Raine. The Wildcats later stretched their lead when Ramsey found Riley Lees for a 10-yard score.

Northwestern took the lead early on Drake Anderson’s 41-yard touchdown run. Anderson converted a crucial 4th down run earlier in the drive.

The Huskers have been plagued by penalties. Nebraska was flagged four times in the first quarter, while its short passing game has struggled. Adrian Martinez has completed 10 of 19 pass attempts.

The Huskers and Wildcats have played some epic games over the series’ history. Each of the last three match-ups have been decided on the final play.
