Tips and tricks for Thanksgiving leftovers
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - As Thanksgiving dinners conclude, it’s now time to start thinking of creative ways to use those leftovers. Food Nutrition and Health Extension Educator, Brenda Aufenkamp, says using smaller containers is a safer way to store your leftovers. she emphasizes the importance of storing containers level to each other instead of stacking.
“If you were thinking ahead of time you’ll want to use a quart size container glass or plastic. My recommendation is that you keep them all level, all sitting level in the refrigerator,” said Aufdenkamp.
If you didn’t store your turkey properly Aufdenkamp says you need to be sure to heat the leftovers to an internal temperature to 165 degrees. She says while turkey can be stored in a freezer for months, in the refrigerator you will have a shorter shelf life.
“I can recommend that you can save your leftovers for three to four days safely in the refrigerator and then you need to get them out and heat them up to an internal temperature of 165 degrees or choose to put them in the freeze at that time and freeze them,” said Aufdenkamp.
