NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - This week’s Friday Night Sports Hero is State Champion wrestler Gavyn Brauer. The North Platte Bulldog won the Class A, 182 division crown last season. NPHS Head Wrestling Coach Dale Hall recalls the special day.

“He wrestled probably his best match he’s ever wrestled up to that point. He was the underdog...I’m still so happy for him and his family,” said Hall.

North Platte won’t be underdogs very often this year. Currently ranked third in the state, the Bulldogs roster has two State Champions and two State Finalists. Coach Hall was quick to credit Gavyn’s leadership as a key part of the team’s success.

“Gavyn leads by example, he comes to the wrestling room every day. He’s ready to work, he’s got a great attitude, he’s coachable and he’s always one of the last guys to leave,” said Hall of his standout senior.

For Brauer, that’s what being a leader is all about:

“I just don’t think anybody would respect a leader that doesn’t do what they expect everybody else to do, so I just have to hold myself accountable before I can hold anyone else accountable.”

Brauer’s attitude and leadership style hasn’t gone unnoticed by his teammates.

“I do respect him a lot because of what he’s done and how he’s done it, working hard. I like people that work hard to get what they want not just by having a natural talent, it means a lot more.” That sentiment expressed by Brauer’s teammate, Skyler Geier-Dodson.

Given the uncertainty surrounding athletics this year, Gavyn isn’t ready to think about defending his title just yet.

“We aren’t really guaranteed anything at all so I’m just trying to soak it in, trying to smell the roses a little bit my senior year. I don’t really know what’s ahead of me so I’m just trying to really take it in and take it one meet at a time,” concluded Brauer.

Tomorrow, North Platte will host their first regular season tournament in at least twelve years.
