Friday Night Sports Hero: Jaylan Ruffin
Jaylan is a four-sport athlete at NPHS and he is this week’s FNSH.
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - This week’s Friday Night Sports Hero is Jaylan Ruffin. Jaylan is a four-sport athlete who excels on the wrestling mat. He was a State Finalist last season, and this year, he wants the title.
“It’s definitely got me hungrier. I lost last year which was tough to swallow...[But]I think I can get back there again...And just take care of business this time. No regrets, it’s my last year,” said Ruffin.
How much would winning State mean to Jaylan?
“It’d be huge for me, something I’d love to do. I’d be a four time State placer here and then a State Champ to add on top of it. That would be awesome to do,” added Ruffin.
Jaylan already has a lengthy list of achievements he has reached on the wrestling mat. He has over one hundred career wins and holds the Bulldog wrestling record for most single season pins. A lot of Jaylan’s motivation comes from being a part of such an elite program.
“Honestly I think it just pushes every single one of us to work harder. You see Gavyn make the State Finals, you want to make the State Finals...All of us just being good athletes we want to keep getting more and more so when someone’s on top we keep a little competition in between the team,” said Ruffin.
Darian Diaz is a teammate of Jaylan’s who has been wrestling with Ruffin since they were kids. Diaz is a State Champ himself, and spoke about his relationship with Jaylan:
We’ll find out next week if Jaylan can capture that State Title he’s chasing, but for now, he’s living in the moment.
“I’m just out there being free, not really thinking too much about things because that’s when you can get caught and slip up. So I’m just letting have it out there and using my athleticism and what I know, and just taking people down, throwing them and getting pins,” said a jovial Ruffin.
