Hershey’s Dayonna Roberts signs to play basketball at NPCC
The Panther Senior is staying close to family and will play at North Platte Community College
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - It was a special afternoon at North Platte Community College for the Roberts family. With her loved ones in attendance, Hershey Basketball’s Dayonna Roberts signed her NLI to compete for NPCC next season. The former Panther got a taste of playing in front of a full NPCC gym during the SPVA tournament, an experience she hasn’t forgotten.
“I love playing in packed gyms, it’s just a rush playing in front of a big crowd...It’s going to be exciting, I cant wait,” said the future Lady Knight.
While Dayonna eagerly awaits the beginning of her career at NPCC, another member of the Roberts family spent the afternoon reflecting on his time as a Knight.
“It’s kinda [like] trying to hold back the tears you know, being in this gym again...To see my little girl do the same thing I got a chance to do....Now I get a chance to see my kid play and play at a place where I played at, it’s a great feeling,” said Willie Roberts.
Willie remains a member of the “Knights Basketball All-Time Roster” from his 1996 season. The proud parent has built a special bond with his daughter that transcends the basketball court.
“He’s like my best friend. He’s been my coach all my life, I love the guy,” added Dayonna, when asked about her dad.
It’s been a family affair for the Roberts, with Dayonna’s older brother Dijon also helping develop his sister’s talents.
“I think playing with two older brothers has helped her out a lot. We got out there everyday and I kind of became a trainer for her...But she did this on her own. She put all the work in, she did everything that she had to do...Dayonna is a winner,” said Dijon of his younger sibling.
