Hershey Tennis tallies third straight win
The Lady Panthers secured their third consecutive victory earlier this afternoon
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - It’s been a great week for the Hershey girl’s tennis team. On Tuesday, the Lady Panthers secured a pair of victories in Holdrege. Hershey defeated the Lady Dusters 7-2. In their second match of the day, they were even better. The Lady Panthers didn’t drop a set against St. Paul, earning a 9-0 victory.
“It’s been a really solid week of tennis for our program. The level of play wasn’t always spectacular, but the competing was. Sometimes, you just have to find a way to win and we’ve been doing that,” said Head Coach John Lehmer.
Hershey entered today’s contest with confidence and momentum on their side. The Lady Panthers swept the doubles matches to jump out to an early lead over Kearney Catholic. Carly Sexson was brilliant, playing out of the top doubles spot. She delivered an ace and a forehand winner to secure an 8-5 victory, with partner Anna Berntson.
Junior Kate Vaughn delivered in a big way for the Lady Panthers today. Playing out of the three doubles spot with partner Emma Nelson-Smith, the duo began to see their lead shrinking. Serving at 7-6, down 15-30, Vaughn came up with a beautiful backhand volley winner to even up the game. Kate and Emma went on to win the next two points, securing an 8-6 victory and completing the double’s sweep.
“It was definitely good for Emma and I to respond at the end of our doubles match. We played well down the stretch and were able to finish it out with a win,” said Vaughn.
Kate continued her dominant day in singles competition, recording an 8-3 victory over Sofia Hayes. Anna Berntson and Brandy Bode joined Vaughn, breezing past their opponents. With the efforts, Hershey made it three wins in a row, beating Kearney Catholic 6-3.
“Our team chemistry lately has been amazing. We’ve all been focused and having fun, it’s been really great,” added Vaughn.
