NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Keep North Platte Lincoln County Beautiful is encouraging people to kick their single-use plastic bag habit.

On Thursday, they distributed 100 reusable shopping bags to Gary’s Super Foods customers over the lunch hour.

According to executive director Mona Anderson, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year around the world and are used on average for twelve minutes.

“They’re on our Earth for thousands of years, so they never actually break down especially once they hit our waterways,” Anderson said. “They really just turn back into an oily substance, so we’re looking at trying to save our community from those blowing bags that we see around and prevent them from getting in our waterways.”

Plastic bags can be recycled at Gary’s Super Foods through a drop off program or at ABC Recycling.

Some additional tips to plan your next shopping trip:

  • Bring your own reusable shopping bags
  • If you don’t have bags, or forget your bags, see if you can consolidate items and use fewer bags (you may have to ask at the checkout line). Don’t use a bag for just 1 or 2 items
  • Recycle your plastic bags through in-store take back programs or through ABC Recycling
  • Reuse your plastic bags before discarding them.
