NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Family and friends of Nancy Whitaker gathered at Centennial Park Friday afternoon for a tree planting and dedication.

Mayor Brandon Kelliher kicked off the ceremony with an Arbor Day Proclamation.

A Greenspire Linden was planted in her honor, not too far away from her beloved husband, Jim.

Tree board members say aside from her graciousness and service to her community, it only made sense to have a tree dedicated in her memory.

“My grandma and grandpa, if you saw one you saw the other,” said grandson Kyle Nichols. “Their trees are right over by each other now so they are up there spending time together and now the trees are down here. We can come down here and enjoy both of them with a short walk away from each other.”

“There are so many memories when you think back on the past it can make me kind of sad, but to have something that moves forward in the future that goes on living, that I will always think about my mom, to keep her memory alive this way and my dad’s memory as well.”

Whitaker passed away last month. She way 84.
