NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Abby Orr is this week’s Friday Night Sports Hero. The North Platte goalie has had an impressive season in net, recording forty saves in one of the Lady Bulldogs fifteen wins. In fact, Abby has only allowed North Platte opponents to score in six games this year. Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, as United Soccer Coaches/Max Preps named Orr as their player of the week for the state of Nebraska last month.

“She’s so reliable and so fierce. She works well with her defenders and is so athletic...It’s awesome to know she’s back there supporting everybody,” said Head Coach Sarah Kaminski.

Perhaps most impressive about Abby’s performance is the fact that soccer is not even her primary sport. Orr is headed to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to play collegiate softball. It just so happens, some of those skills on the diamond, translate to her goalkeeping game.

“A lot of it has to do with softball and playing shortstop so it kind of ties in together. Sometime the diving is a little bit different as a goalie...So I’m working on that, but it’s coming together.”

It’s coming together at the right time, as Abby and Gracie Haneborg have led the Lady Bulldogs to a State Tournament appearance, with competition scheduled to begin next week. Orr and Haneborg have cemented their legacies on North Platte athletics. Now, it will be one final journey for the pair that has spent countless hours on the soccer field and basketball court together over the years.

“I’ve been playing with Abby since elementary school. I just feel like a lot of people look up to me and Abby and now, we’ve only got a week left together. It’s really sad,” said Haneborg of the duo’s final days.

With graduation this weekend, the seniors prepare to enter the next chapter of their lives. Even so, not even a move to Tennessee will remove the impact North Platte has had on it’s athletes.

“I would definitely say that the city of North Platte has a lot of spirit and supports their athletes. Being a Lady Bulldog is really awesome and it’s special,” concluded Orr.
