KIMBALL, Neb. (KNOP) - A military humvee caught fire on State Highway 71, and crews remain on the scene to safely detonate the ammunition that was onboard the vehicle.

The Kimball County Sheriff’s Department could not share many details but could advise that the humvee was loaded with ammunition, and because of the fire and the potential detonation, the ammunition must be detonated but only so much can be set off at a time. There is no word on what caused the humvee to start on fire.

The fire caused State Highway 71 to be blocked off for the duration of the containment.

All through traffic from Harrisburg is being routed on the county roads to Kimball.

Kimball County Highway Superintendent Randy Bymer said the scene is about six miles north of Kimball on State Highway 71, and the road is blocked off at County Road 48, with detours set up accordingly. County Road 37 is part of the detour.

Superintendent Bymer expects the road to be closed through at least Friday.
