$300,000 to man in 2016 Kearney police shooting

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) A man who suffered gunshot wounds during a June 2016 traffic stop in Kearney is getting a big payment from the city's insurance company.

Jose Klich was shot and wounded after he tried to evade a Kearney police officer after a traffic stop. Officer Derek Payton was charged with a crime in the case, but a jury found him innocent.

According to a memo to the Kearney city council, the city's insurance carrier is going to pay $290,000 to Klich for damages and medical bills. The city is paying Klich $10,000, which is the insurance deductible. The settlement includes payment of any medical expenses Klich incurred.
