SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (KNEP) Riverside Discovery Center is getting into the spirit of Valentine’s Day. You can name a roach after your S.O., ex, or just for fun.
The Madagascar hissing cockroach grows to two or three inches, and are often kept as pets. The cockroaches at the zoo paint on tiny canvases using their feet and torsos. The paint is water soluble and doesn’t harm the cockroaches.
Naming cockroaches is becoming a popular Valentine’s Day joke. While some zoos will name a salmon or cockroach and feed it to a zoo animal, that isn’t part of Riverside’s deal.
You can buy a Valentine’s Day package at the Riverside Discovery Center Gift Shop. For $10, your valentine will receive a magnet canvas painted by a cockroach, a lovely roach-themed “card”, and a certificate of naming.
If you would rather not deliver it in person, or you would like to send the gift by mail, the zoo adds a $3 S&H fee. It’s a great option for people who have everything, and much cheaper to send than flowers.
Name a cockroach after your Valentine by visiting the gift shop in person, or visit riversidediscoverycenter.org.
