NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Good thing a North Platte couple out on a walk was paying attention on Tuesday morning.

They are the ones who alerted a North Platte mom that the pickup parked in her driveway at 19th and Jackson was on fire. Sara Murphy had just returned home after dropping her oldest children off at school.

Murphy says the flames burnt some of the house too.

"I had somebody come up, and honk, pulling into my drive way to let me know that it was on fire because my son and I were inside," Murphy said.

City Fire Marshal George Lewis says the fire started in the pickup truck's engine and spread to the carport, and eventually the house. He says firefighters checked the home's attic to make sure the flames did not spread.

"It's just one of those things. You've go to be awfully careful with your vehicle. From time to time make sure you get them checked out," Lewis said.

Lewis says it's up to the insurance company to figure out why the pickup caught on fire.
