Chick days means a market for many

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP)- The aisles are chirping at Orscheln's Farm and Home, where over 800 chicks are currently for sale. Chicks are sold from March to May in stores to replenish herds, or for those who are just wanting to start out.

Nutrena Rep Jodi Holmes explained the many reasons why people like to buy chicks and raise chickens.

"Chickens are really easy and inexpensive to get into. Once you have all of the typical setup, starter costs it's really just maintaining them with feed and fresh bedding. It's a fairly cheap way to have that continual pet, or show bird, meat or whatever you want.

Orschlen's "chicken" lady Kaely Perkins listed the items that the store has on hand for those needing to get new supplies too.

"We've got everything you really need to start out, especially in their chick phase. All they really need is a tank, some feed, water, and bedding. As they grow they'll need a bigger area to stretch and grow. We have little coops too," said Perkins.

On Monday, March 25th, there will be an open-hen house where Holmes will be available to answer all questions related to raising a flock.
