SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. With the estimated 1,500 corporate jobs lost from Cabela’s in Sidney, it made a huge impact on the city. With the addition of UST Global/Xpanxion and other interested businesses, the city is looking to add between 200 to 250 new jobs in year 2019 with an overall potential 600 jobs in two years.

“We have seen a huge impact with the loss of jobs and the relocation of jobs from Cabela’s to Bass Pro Corporate Office in Springfield, Missouri,” said Melissa Norgard, Economic Development Director for City of Sidney. “We hope that these new jobs will offset both the job loss and some of the revenue that was loss."

With the addition of UST Global Xpansion, a company focused on healthcare based solutions, are looking to hire 50 people in their first quarter with an overall potential workforce of 200. With the intent of Sidney aiming to provide more jobs, this new facility with help them with their mission.

“We want to bring as many opportunities here as possible,” said Norgard. “We want people who want to stay in the community to be able to stay in the community and we want to be able to attract people to either move back here because they left or new people to move here.”

Alongside UST Global Xpansion, 10 to 12 companies in the manufacturing sector of Sidney is looking to have over 100 openings. The new jobs are helping Sidney in a positive way but one of the biggest issues the city is facing; keeping the 18 to 24 age group within Sidney.

“The new opportunities will appeal to some of that millennial 18 to 24 crowd and we hope once we get them here, they realize what a great place it is to live, how great it is to live in rural America and we can keep them here.”

Norgard says the community has been positive about the job creation project but says that timing has made it difficult with individuals and families seeking work or even displaced. They are determined to help as many people as they can.
