Two German sheperds were stuck on the icy North Platte river at Cody Park Tuesday morning. The dogs owner found them and was able to persuade one back to shore.

Rescue units arrived at 9:30 am to put their lives on the ice to retrieve the other dog whose body was halfway submerged in water. Jeremy Hankla, captain of the North Platte Fire Department, was present for the rescue.

Hankla explained how it was a rescue unit team effort, "We were able to get out on the ice. The ice was safe enough for the rescuer to get out on. The animal control was present, the police department, the fire department, and the lincoln county dive team."

Scott Ambrose was the North Platte Fire Fighter and Rescue Diver who crawled out on the ice to make the rescue.

The rescuers say an incident like this rarely happens, but they were clearly prepared.
