Kentucky man dies in collision east of Sutherland

One person died Tuesday night in that Interstate 80 collision east of Sutherland. The Nebraska State Patrol says 46-year-old Steven Freeman of Nicholasville, Kentucky, died in the accident.

Freeman was driving a pickup on the Interstate when the driver of a semi crossed the median and hit him last night. 63-year-old Gerald Chiles of Sacramento, California, was driving the semi.

Both were wearing seatbelts. Troopers say Chiles refused medical treatment. We don't know why Chiles crossed the median.

NSP says the investigation is not over. We don't know yet if there will be charges.

ORIGINAL STORY: April 10, 2018

Officials with Nebraska State Patrol said a semi traveling westbound on Interstate 80 crossed the median and hit a pickup truck traveling eastbound near the Sutherland rest area.

Troopers said the driver of the truck was taken to Great Plains Health with life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the semi was also taken to the hospital, and officials say the driver of the semi refused medical treatment.

At this time, Nebraska State Patrol troopers are not sure why the semi crossed the median.

Sutherland, Hershey, and North Platte fire crews responded to the scene.
