From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Fronteir County residents were invited to drop-off their old or unwanted tires.

J.R. Houser is the one in charge of the recycling program and said they do it every two years on a grant from West Central Nebraska Development District to haul away 100 tons of tires.

"We've had so many years that they'll ask me when the next one's going to be because they're anticipating having it," said Houser, "Most of them are very grateful because it gets them out of their shops. A lot of farmers keep tires for a year or two, especially semi tires, and they get to clean their shops and just helps the county in general."

Houser said it's good to dispose of tires that are lying around your property as they can attract insects and rodents.

"The mosquito problem is big in town you have water in the tires and out in the country. I don’t like to see them in the ditches because when we build rebuild roads, we constantly have to pick them up, so it just keeps the town and the rural setting a lot nicer looking," said Houser.

The tires collected will head to Colorado to be made into landfill coverings as well as be ground up for playground mulch.
