NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - Kids Klub got off to a fast and sweaty start Friday morning.

Teachers, volunteers and parents gathered to cheer and run with their kids in the annual Kids Klub 5K at Cody Park.

The kids have trained at the Cody Pool for the past month to get in shape to run.

Kids Klub is an after school and summer program designed to keep kids in shape both mentally and physically.

Director Carrie Lienemann says the event couldn't happen without community support.

"We had a family come forward and donate the cost of our swimming lessons this year. We are besides ourselves for that gift. We had 175 kids participate that took weekly swimming lessons to help with their endurance and get them ready for today," said Lienemann.

All of the kids were given a pair of tennis shoes by a "Kids Run the Nation" grant.

Kids Klub will also hold their graduation event Friday afternoon at the high school.
