For the past two days, deputies have packaged and delivered Thanksgiving food baskets to families in need throughout the county.

Eighteen families will each receive a basket which includes a turkey and all of the trimmings.

Corporal Season Trevino says she came up with the idea about two weeks ago to help fill a void in Lincoln County.

"The families were very appreciative, thankful and grateful, some of them actually shed some tears, you could tell it really helped them out a lot," Trevino said. "Fuel to get back to North Platte, that's quite a jaunt for them and I think that was the other perk to delivering is, we just delivered it directly to the families that way they wouldn't have to worry about transportation or anything."

Department staff as well as Kelley Scritsmier and Byrne Law Offices, Hershey Super Foods, Macs Foods in Wallace and the North Platte Cub Scout Pack 292 donated the food.

The sheriff's office plans to do the project next year.
