Lexington man makes plea deal in rural 2016 Dawson County homicide

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. KNOP A Dawson County man is making a plea deal and avoiding a jury trial in the death of a Lexington man.

Jose Regalado Mendez, whose real name is Manuel Juarez-Mendez, plead guilty to manslaughter and use of a weapon to commit a felony in Dawson County Court Thursday.

He was originally charged with first-degree murder in the October 2016 slaying of 37-year-old Jose Hernandez.

However, prosecutors lowered the charge in exchange for Juarez Mendez's plea.

Prosecutors say Juarez-Mendez shot Hernandez and hid the body near a farmhouse north of Lexington.

The remains were found December 12, 2016.

His sentencing is scheduled for January 7th.
