Thursday Lincoln and Buffalo Elementary KIDS Klub fourth and fifth graders took a field trip to the Lincoln Children's Zoo in Lincoln to meet some of the animals they have been skyping with at school.
Kids even had the chance to feed the penguins and got an up close look at other animals like camels and reptiles.
Many agreed the highlight of the trip was seeing and feeding the penguins.
North Platte Public Schools' after school program, KIDS Klub, has been awarded a competitive "One-Year Opportunity Grant" from the Nebraska Department of Education.
These grants fund partnerships that provide hands-on learning opportunities after school.
KIDS Klub has partnered with Nebraska Game and Parks and the Lincoln Children's Zoo.
The Lincoln Elementary KIDS Klub students met with zookeepers at the Lincoln Children's Zoo via Skype to help them learn about future careers working with wildlife.
Among the animals they saw on Skype was a Madagascar hissing cockroach and a chameleon.
"I just like to know that we have like those kinds of animals on our earth without even knowing it in the first place," Lillian, a Lincoln Elementary fifth grader, said.
"My favorite part is where I can Skype and I can see the animals," Isaiah, a Lincoln Elementary fourth grader, said.
