Local hotels prepare for winter storm

North Platte Hotels in North Platte began to fill up quickly after Ogallala closed the interstate at 10 am Wednesday.

Tru by Hilton is one of fourteen hotels and motels that have been in communication with the North Platte Lincoln County Visitors Bureau, the Nebraska Department of Transportation and Lincoln County Emergency Management.

General Manager Cody O'Dell says while North Platte typically does fill up, it takes a community effort to help weather the storm.

"When a road closes, it can have a huge impact on a community," O'Dell said. "As soon as North Platte fills up and there is no more accommodations, they'll close this exit and put people on the next community which is Gothenburg; that's just to make sure nobody is ever stranded, sleeping in their cars, sleeping in gas stations and that they always have a safe place to stay overnight."

The Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Department of Transportation were re-directing traffic at Newberry Access due to the closures.

Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Brandon Meyers is advising people to stay put and says the best way to stay up to date with the latest road conditions and closures is by using the 511 app.
