NORTH PLATTE, Neb. KNOP-TV The North Platte Public School District held their first of seven presentations to discuss safety, security, among other improvements at five schools Tuesday.

District officials plan to boost safety and security measures at Buffalo Elementary and Jefferson Elementary and the North Platte High School.

Air quality improvements are also planned for Eisenhower Elementary, Jefferson Elementary and McDonald Elementary.

The improvements are expected to cost six million dollars. The district plans to use $500,000 in building funds to help pay for the upgrades.

However, the district is asking voters to help pay for those upgrades through a $0.045 levy during a special mail-in election in March.

Officials say the five year override will cost taxpayers on average $45/year per $100.00 assessed value and will not increase property taxes.

"We started a safety committee two years ago after the Parkland High School shooting in Florida and we started looking at our campuses," said North Platte Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ron Hanson. "When we reached a point in our research and recognized some vulnerability, the timing was perfect for us actually. The high school bond is being paid off and we have an opportunity to reach out to our patrons to say "hey, we have an opportunity to address some issues."

The election is scheduled for March 10.

Ballots are expected to be mailed out the third week of February.
