The trail adds an additional 2.8 miles to North Platte's trails system and follows the NPPD Canal to Lake Maloney.
Jim's wife, Nancy, says her late husband would've been delighted to see this portion of the trail come to fruition.
"It's a real thrill and it's so nice that all of the people haven't forgotten him," Whitaker said. "I'm just very touched that they would go ahead and do this."
The North Platte Trails Network says a portion of the funds raised from last year's first annual Jim Whitaker's Platte River run helped fund the trail.
"This is just a perfect tribute to him and that this bench overlooks our great city," said North Platte Trails Network Committee Member Shae Caldwell."People can come up here and and remember him and the great work that he did for our community."
The run returns August 10th.
